The Ego

We have all been fed a fundamental lie from infancy through religion, schools and our culture. And its effects are evident everywhere in the conflicts we see in the world around us. That lie is basically a perspective, or a 'lens' that sees ourselves and the world around us as separate. The lens discolors everything we see and perverts true undestanding of who we are and what is going on in this world. That lens is the human ego.

Components of the Ego

1) I am WHAT I HAVE;
('I am my stuff; materialism')

2) I am WHAT I LOOK LIKE;
(body identification)

3) I am WHAT I DO;
(my job, career, interests, responsibilities)

3) I am WHAT OTHERS THINK OF ME;
(self defined by the mirrors in society)

4) I am SEPARATE FROM OTHERS;
(sees others as enemies/threats or allies)

5) I am SEPARATE FROM WHAT I DESIRE;
(what I want is outside of me)

6) I am SEPARATE FROM GOD or SOURCE;
(the BIG LIE....)

The most common thread in all ego dominated perspectives is the latter notion that we are separate from Source. This lie is the root cause of all dysfunction, war and unhappiness in the world.

We extrapolate that feeling of separateness to encompass being separate from other people and indeed the entire world around us. By seing others as separate from ourselves, we naturally go on to judge them as good and bad, right and wrong. By seeing others as separate from ourselves, we disassociate from them, and indeed give ourselves permission to inflict our judgment upon them, albeit passively or agressively.

The ego thrives in this atmosphere of competition. We are encouraged by our cultural society to engage in competition with other egos and be better, bigger and have MORE than others. The ego VALUES itself by the cultural parameters of how much stuff we have, how beautiful we are, how important or influential we are, how much money we make, and how popular and well liked we are. It is either relishing the domination of other egos, or it is feeling worthless by virtue of the fact of others domination over them.

The ego can love itself or hate itself. It really doesn't matter. It is two sides of the same coin. When the drama of 3rd dimensional life ends, so will all the 'prized' possessions of the ego. The possessions and toys will all be gone, the opinions of other people won't amount to squat, and what your body looked like will be meaningless. You will be left with only your expreiences of engaging in this competition for dominance with other egos.

What will that have accomplished in the larger game of your soul? That is something worthwhile to think about.

The ego is built on illusion: lies and untruths, and is primarily an artifact of a dysfunctional mind. It is built on beliefs and opinions that have carefully been crafted in our mind by our society, and augmentaed by our life's experiences. But it is not who we really are.

The ego is a really a major distraction to discovering who we really are and what we have come to here accomplish.

So, who are we really? And what are we really here for and what is truly of value, if our egos are simply temporary vehicles that give no lasting happiness?

It is a desire to answer this question that is the BEGINNING of all wisdom and the KEY to the next evolution in human consciousness. We are living in exciting times, as spiritual concepts that have been with us for millenia are now being supported by our most cutting edge science: the world of quantum mechanics. And from that perspective, the human ego is a phantom and everything it believes about it being special or separate is simple a lie, for EVERYTHING is made of the same raw materials and is interconnected.
